Imagination, Creativity, Arts, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration, making
When children can ideate and find solutions by exploring and experimenting with real things and processes in a fun and engaging environment, learning becomes concrete and relevant. Maker spaces promote cross-generational sharing and learning, inspire creativity, and integrate technology and the arts in innovative ways. Children and their adults can be inspired by an artist’s work, and then do their own thing! Here, you can experiment with various artistic media, such as screen printing, papermaking, wire sculpting, mosaic, circuitry, collage, photography, 3-D printing, etc, and the work is the child’s own. Young visitors can take pride in the fact that they’ve interacted with existing art from an actual artist, used their imaginations and whatever skill they have, and made something truly unique and specific to them. This exhibit is a wonderful way to expand a child’s imagination, encourage working with others, experience patience in a process, and foster a sense of pride in a finished product.

PBS Connection: Mixed-Media Art | PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC®
Meet mixed-media artist and educator Chanel Thervil as she works with a group of children to create collages in this video from PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC®. In her studio, children see examples of Chanel’s art. Using a variety of materials, children then make their own mixed-media art, exploring how the same materials can result in different interpretations.
